Emergency Appointments

Experiencing a dental emergency right now? Call us on 01884 32240 — or WhatsApp +44 74138 84689 — and we will do everything we can to see you today.

When to call 999 or 111 instead
Some symptoms require urgent medical attention rather than a dental appointment.

If you are experiencing severe facial swelling affecting your eye, airway, or ability to swallow; difficulty breathing; uncontrolled bleeding; or serious facial trauma — call 999 or contact NHS 111 immediately. Do not wait for a dental appointment.

When to seek urgent care

If you are experiencing any of the following, do not wait for a routine appointment. Early assessment can often make treatment simpler and help avoid the problem worsening.

What we can usually help with on the day

Toothache · Dental abscesses · Abscess drainage · Temporary fillings · Lost or broken fillings · Recementing crowns where clinically suitable · Simple extractions · Fractured teeth · Broken or lost dentures · Urgent X-rays

Emergency appointments are £250. This covers a focused assessment, X-rays of the affected area where needed, diagnosis, and routine emergency treatment where clinically appropriate on the day. A separate oral health assessment appointment is required for a comprehensive examination — we will discuss this with you before you leave.

What to expect

Your emergency appointment, step by step

From the moment you contact us to leaving the chair, we aim to make the process straightforward.

1
Contact us
Call 01884 32240, book online via the patient portal, or message us on WhatsApp. Tell us briefly what is happening and we will confirm your appointment.
2
Arrive & settle
Parking is available nearby with ample space. Our team will meet you and run through any necessary paperwork before you see the dentist.
3
Focused assessment
Your dentist will assess the presenting problem — including X-rays of the affected area where needed — to understand what is causing your pain and what needs to be done about it.
4
Emergency treatment
The priority is getting you out of pain. Your dentist will carry out the appropriate emergency treatment on the day — local anaesthetic is used to numb the area where needed. This may be an extraction, temporary dressing, or drainage of an abscess, depending on the clinical picture.
5
What happens next
Before you leave, your dentist will explain what was done and what, if anything, needs to follow. A full oral health assessment is a separate appointment — if you would like to register with us as a new patient, we will arrange this for you before you go.
Continuing care

From emergency patient to registered patient

Many of our most long-standing patients came to us first in an emergency. Once the immediate problem is resolved, they stayed — because the quality of care, the thoroughness of the assessment, and the clarity of the communication were noticeably different from what they had experienced elsewhere.

FAQs

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about Emergency Appointments. At Gold's Place Dental, we take a personalised approach to every treatment, ensuring care is tailored to your individual needs. If you have any questions or would like further information, our team will be happy to help.

Can I book an emergency appointment online, or do I need to call?

You can book directly via our online patient portal, which is available at any time. If you would prefer to speak to someone — or if you are in significant discomfort and would like confirmation that an appointment is available today — please call us on 01884 32240 during practice hours. You are also welcome to contact us via WhatsApp on +447413884689

Does the £250 fee cover everything, or will I be charged more on the day?
Emergency appointments are £250. This covers a focused assessment, X-rays of the affected area where needed, diagnosis, and routine emergency treatment where clinically appropriate on the day. If further or definitive treatment is needed — for example, a course of root canal therapy or a replacement crown — your dentist will explain the options and costs clearly before anything is booked. A full oral health examination is a separate appointment, which we can arrange before you leave if you would like to register as a new patient.
Will treatment be carried out under local anaesthetic?
Where treatment is required, local anaesthetic is used to numb the area being treated. Most patients find that once this takes effect, the procedure itself is comfortable. Some post-operative sensitivity or mild discomfort is normal and typically resolves within a few days; your dentist will advise you on appropriate aftercare and pain management before you leave. If you have concerns about anaesthesia or a history of dental anxiety, please let us know when you book — we take this seriously and will take the time to address it.
I am not currently registered with Gold’s Place Dental. Can I still attend as an emergency patient?
Yes. You do not need to be a registered patient to access emergency care at the practice. Emergency appointments are available to new patients, and we welcome patients from across Cullompton, and the wider Mid Devon area. If you decide to continue your care with us after the emergency appointment, we will discuss registering as a routine patient and the options available to you — including our monthly membership plan.
What if my tooth has been knocked out? What should I do before I arrive?

Call us immediately — time is the most critical factor. If you have the tooth, handle it only by the crown (the visible part), not the root. Do not scrub or disinfect it. If possible, place it back in the socket; if not, keep it moist in a small container of milk or, if milk is unavailable, in your own saliva. Do not store it in water. Re-implantation is sometimes clinically possible, particularly within the first 30 to 60 minutes. Call 01884 32240 as you travel to us.

Note: this guidance applies to adult (permanent) teeth only. Do not attempt to reinsert a baby tooth — contact us for advice.
